Duke University’s Library and J.B. Fuqua

Kanchou writes “Just read this article of the recent death of John Brooks Fuqua, the namesake of Duke Universty’s Fuqua school of Business.
“Mr Fuqua, brought up by his maternal grandparents whose name he adopted, never attended college. But as a young man he frequently borrowed books from Duke’s library. After his borrowing was mentioned in a profile in Fortune magazine, a librarian from the school dug up his old library card order and got in touch with him. Mr Fuqua was so moved by the gesture that he donated over $24m to the school in the years thereafter, including $10m in 1980 to establish the business school.”

It’s a very beautiful story on more than one level. It demostrates the libraries and librarians power to enrich people’s life. It also shows how libraries and librarians can benefit their host institution.

Librarians often provides services to wider community than just their host institution. Clearly, we must prioritize the service for our institution’s population first. But Mr. Fuqua’s legacies shows that creating good will in wider oommunities can pay dividends down the road.”
