Des Moines School Libraries Lose Librarians

Here’s a piece from the Des Moines Register about how Des Moines (IA) schools have lost almost all their middle school librarians due to budget issues.

During a budget forum this week in Des Moines, parent Sarah Bolten , president of Hanawalt Elementary School’s Parent Teacher Association, told the board she would have to rethink options for her daughter if “volunteers would be running our library,” among other things.

A 2002 study of 439 Iowa school libraries found that schools with the highest reading scores had the strongest library media programs. In middle schools, eighth-graders had higher reading scores when they had more exposure to librarians and the library had extended hours, according to the study called “Make the Connection.”
