…16 million subscribers in 1993, just 10 years ago. Today that number is nearly 160 million subscribers nationwide,” said Largent.

Largent also cited statistics indicating the wireless industry’s commitment to improved customer service. “One of the comments I hear a lot from regulators and legislators is about quality of service… We had 13,000 cell sites nationwide in 1993. Today, there are almost 163,000 cell sites across the United States.”

Largent also highlighted the 10 year decline in a consumer’s average monthly bill. In 1993, that figure was $61.49, and by 2003 had dropped to $49.91, a nearly 20% decrease. The number of carrier employees also reflects the growth of the industry, rising from 40,000 in 1993 to more than 205,000 in 2003.

Total Wireless Subscribership Up Nearly 10%

Overall wireless subscribership increased to 158.7 million by December 2003, up from 140.7 million as of December 2002, an increase of almost 18 million.

Total billable minutes of use (MOU) for 2003 reached 813 billion – up 30% from 619 billion for 2002.

Digital Penetration Surpasses 92%

The digital penetration rate increased 18.3% since December 2002, to more than 92% of all reported subscribers at the end of 2003.

Total Six-Month Service Revenues Rise 16%

Wireless Investment Up Nearly 15%

Wireless carriers reported $145.8 billion in total cumulative capital investment as of December 2003 – up nearly $19 billion from $126.9 billion as of December 2002.

New Cell Sites Increase 17%
