Controversial book dropped Milan school board vote allows library to offer ‘The Chocolate War’

“The Chocolate War,” a controversial young adult novel set in a Catholic boys’ school where bullying permeates the social system, can no longer be taught as part of ninth-grade English classes at Milan High School.

According to The Ann Arbor News the Milan school board voted 5-2 Wednesday night to remove the book from the curriculum but to allow the 1974 novel by Robert Cormier to remain in the school library.

    Dirty Weasels!
    Of all the recent censorship stories this one actually angers me. I have not read many high school themed novels but this one is spot on.
    The novel is realistic about how kids, teachers and school administrators can be self-interested weasels.

    The novel is realistic . . .

    That’s the problem; most censorship challenges, at bottom, attack depictions of characters — read: people — that are true to life. The rest are based on lies.
