Conservative Opposition to PATRIOT Act

Daniel writes “The Washington Times carried an article titled “Patriot Act divides Bush loyalists” describing the intense debate going on within the conservative movement regarding the USA PATRIOT Act and other security legislation.

Daniel writes “The Washington Times carried an article titled “Patriot Act divides Bush loyalists” describing the intense debate going on within the conservative movement regarding the USA PATRIOT Act and other security legislation.
The article lists the following conservatives as opponents of USAPA:

Former Rep. Bob Barr, a Georgia Republican & Clinton impeachment manager.

David A. Keene – American Conservative Union Chairman.

Sen. Larry E. Craig – Republican from Idaho.

Rep. C.L. “Butch” Otter – Republican from Idaho.

Phyllis Schlafly – Eagle Forum President.

Paul M. Weyrich – Free Congress Foundation President

Two quotes that stand out in this article:

Mr. Barr, challenged to produce an abuse of the new law:
“I don’t care if there were no examples so far,” Mr. Barr is said to have countered. “We can’t say we’ll let government have these unconstitutional powers in the Patriot Act because they will never use them. Besides, who knows how many times the government has used them? They’re secret searches.”

A House Judiciary Committee counsel who asked not to be identified, proud of the NON-TERRORISM scope of the law:

“We did not write a criminal law to be limited to terrorism, except where we said so, and Congress intended these laws to be tools to protect us from all kinds of crimes,”

I think this article is news because 1) It clearly shows that opposition to the Patriot Act is NOT limited to liberals and 2) Defenders of the Act are quoted as saying it is intended to be used in “all kinds of crimes.””
