Checkout time comes for library trailblazer

The Seattle Times takes a Long Look at the career of Mark Nesse, who is retiring after 30 years as director of the Everett Public Library, is being succeeded by Eileen Simmons, his assistant director. Both say gifted mentors played a big role in their librarian careers.

“When central business districts were ailing, Mark has always been one of the players with downtown business and other departments of the city to try and keep breathing life into the downtown,” Dilgard said. “He always has been a great workhorse for all the good causes. He’s always the first person to roll up his sleeves. Mark was the department head who figured out what was necessary to pass a public bond issue, and he was willing to do the enormous amount of work to make the politics of public approval a reality.”
