Check Out WebJunction.org

I Pointed to Web Juntion the other day, but if you missed it, the site is worth a look.

WebJunction.org is an online community of libraries and other agencies sharing knowledge and experience to provide the broadest public access to information technology.

Building on the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s five-year-old U.S. Library Program, which has provided over 40,000 computers with Internet access to more than 10,000 libraries across the United States and Canada, WebJunction is the work of five organizations, led by OCLC.

    Sorry, the snippet from the site’s home page made my eyes glaze over:

    I found a better description of what they are on the “Call to Action” page:

    Welcome to WebJunction, a community of knowledge and learning developed by and for people committed to public access computing. This space was built for sharing tips, tools, questions, and answers about computing and the Internet – through exchanged conversations, connections, courses and documents. Through our collective knowledge, we seek to provide the best possible public access to information technology for patrons, clients and customers, and for our staff.

    You may have guessed (since the article mentioned the B&MG Foundation) that this is geared towards public libraries, and that is partially correct. (It includes support information for Gates PCs.) But it also has a mix of categorized links to other sites (I was just perusing the “Acceptable Use and Computer Policies” section) as well as some original content (including a short article on methods for monitoring network traffic and a brief explanation of DNS).

    Definitely worth checking out.
