Some Good News for Salinas, California, residents, where The people running a fund-raising campaign to keep the libraries open in Salinas say they’re close to reaching their goal.
Leaders of the group called “Rally Salinas” say thanks to recent donations from religious and medical organizations, they’ve reached more than 75 percent of a 500-thousand dollar goal.
Is it really good news?
While I’m glad that Salinas will have skeleton library service, I think that focusing on community-based rescues such as this sets a bad precedent. It almost smacks of the old subscription library model. Even though the libraries will still be open to all, the limited hours and services will create a restrictive service model.
