Detailed in a New York Times article, Airline to Ask Travelers for $10 for Showing Up Northwest airlines is going to charge $10 extra if you don’t purchase a ticket online. What if you don’t have Internet access? The article suggest that you use your local library.

    I have helped several people with airline reservations, most of whom had little-to-no experience with computers. The only real problem I’ve run into is that many of the online services require an email address, since that’s how they verify or send an e-ticket. Many of these folks don’t have email addresses. Some are okay with setting up their own account. But I also keep a junk account for such situations so we can get the ticket/confirmation into the user’s hand as quickly as possible. Priceline is a pain, though, since users suggest a price, then wait to see if they will meet your price. It’s not an instantaneous thing (or at least it wasn’t the last time I helped someone), so I encourage those folks to get an email account, since there might be a bit of haggling invovled.

    If a 10$ charge is scaring ticket buyers to the internet, well, wait until they buy a coffee and a muffin at the airport.

    People putting private information (mainly credit card numbers associated with a name) on a public access computer scares the bejeebies out of me. Until computers are as prevalent as toasters, I think this is a pretty unfair deal. I wonder if Northwest has any idea how much spyware I clean off the public terminals on a regular basis…

    Never mind nefarious keyloggers… what about the people that leave their personal belongings at the computer when they’re done? Never had a credit card left, but right now we have three drivers licenses at the information desk… Risky risky risky.
