Branch closings look imminent for Erie public library

Now that Pennsylvania governor Ed Rendell has slashed state funding for libraries in half, the Erie County Council plans to adopt a budget on November 18 that will result in the closing of five out of the county’s six library branches. At least one, and maybe both, of the two bookmobiles will also be eliminated. GoErie.com tells the sad (and by now, all too familiar) story.

    I don’t know if they have a central library in addition to their branches, but it sure sounds like a new slogan: Erie County Public Libraries, a System of One.

    Here’s the official word: Four branches to close. No mention of the bookmobiles in this very short blurb.

    According to a longer article on Erie Times the library council voted to close the four branches because they are not located in right areas and they will work on opening another one somewhere, using grant money. They also voted to get rid of one of the book mobiles.

    In the meantime, Edinboro is trying to start up it’s own library in two years.
