One From The NYDaily News reports on Japanese manga – edgy, graphic novels with translated storylines steeped in mystery, fantasy and the surreal. They say the books are multiplying in bookstores, as well as in video shops and other retailers.
The $100 million U.S. market for these paperbacks – focused mainly on ‘tweeners and teeners, 12 to 17, but with many older fans – is booming and drawing in new players, including mighty Random House.
Just bought one yesterday
I’ve only been reading graphic novels for a few months. I just bought a manga yesterday but now I can’t remember what the title is. I’ve met a lot of people who used to turn up their nose at “comic books” but are now fans of GNs and manga.
Perfect timing
Thanks for posting this Blake as I have to turn in an issue statement regarding why we should have a graphic novel collection in our adult department. This will be a great sideline for that. I think every library should have at least one or two titles on hand if only to gauge interest in the format.
