‘Bloody Sunday’ Civil Rights March To Be Recreated

kmccook writes “The stretch of Main Street from the New Port Richey Public Library to Sims Park is less than one mile, but it will be used Saturday to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the first attempt at a 54-mile black voter rights march from Selma to Montgomery, Ala.

The Selma “Bloody Sunday” March, organized by library events and community outreach coordinator Ann Scott, will recall the horror in Selma on March 7, 1965. Saturday’s two-hour event begins at 11 a.m. behind the library at 5939 Main St.

    I hope they have a good turnout…
    although with the general apathy in my area I don’t expect too much.

    I’ll tell my brother and sister in law, that is in their county and they are rabid liberals (not that being a conservative makes me opposed to voter rights – heck I even think convicted felons should be able to vote).

    I don’t have a problem with convicted felons voting when they are out of jail, its in jail that I have a problem.

    I too hope they have a good turnout but after seeing Condoleeze Rice today on C-Span speaking in a conference with Chinese representatives concerning issues on North Korea and Taiwan I have to ask if 1. the people marching understand how far things have come in this country and 2. if they are willing to put any of that energy towards promoting freedom and rights in other countries.

    They did have a nice turnout. Reading the articles it looks like the New Port Richey (NPR) library has some great adult programming going on.

    Pasco county, in which NPR is located has a county library system but NPR goes it alone with its own municipal system. My director and assistant director both worked for the Pasco system and they said NPR did a good thing by remaining autonomous.

    You mean like the rights of Iraqi civilians to not be bombed in their own beds and marketplaces by American helicopter gunships? Hundreds of thousands of Americans expended a great deal of energy upholding those kinds of rights, and all to no avail. If the Bush regime is agitating for rights in China, it’s a safe bet the regime smells a buck to be made out of it, but not out of any respect for human rights.

    How’s that Canadian foreign policy working out? Bringing much peace to the world? Solving any problems? Just curious.

    More than a commemoration.
    The Selma to Montgomery march focused also on protecting voting rights today. We discussed voter fraud issues, discrimination at the ballot box, and the importance of protecting everyone’s right to vote.

    The event was also a platform for encouraging people to attend the year long program called Common Threads. Common Threads not only celebrates diversity with cultural heritage perfomances but incorporates films and forums from the Human Rights Video Series.

    The year has been devoted to educating patrons on human rights issues and inspiring activism.

    I’ll say that you are no longer the bad guys when the Hague tries the principles responsible for Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo Bay, 100,000 dead Iraqi civilians, the Iran Contra Affair, the destabilization of several South American governments and the bloody-handed police states that were sponsored by the U.S., and for the incompetence, malfeasance, and criminal negligence perpetrated by the Republican governments of Reagan, Bush, and Bush. I’d tell you to read Against All Enemies to see for yourself how Clinton’s was the only goverment that tried to be effective against terrorism, but, hey, I know you’ve already got your mind made up and nothing so simple are facts is going to change it.

    And while we haven’t been hunting down and executing terrorists in the streets the way I would like to (certain Amurcans would be high on my list), at least we are not destabilizing entire regions with military misadventurism. So, yeah, we actually are bringing a fair bit of peace to the world.
