Blood Sucking Reviews on Amazon

There is an article in the New York Times Book Section about Anne Rice using Amazon.com to respond to critics of her book Blood Canticle. Reviews written by Anne Rice at Amazon can be found here. Scroll down about eight reviews and you will see Anne’s rebuke. In the list of reviews it is interesting to see what else she is reading and watching. Batman Returns and several books about Jesus are on the list. Anne also recommends Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ

Computers
In one or the reviews a reader comments about errors in the book, For instance, in Tale of the Body Thief, Rice tells us that Lestat is adept at hacking into police mainframe computers to track serial killers. In Blood Canticle, Lestat is not only incapable of sending a simple email, but doesn’t know what one is and is amazed at what a computer can do!

Swelled head and petulance
Judging by what I read in the article, I’d say that Rice is taking herself way too seriously, and at least part of what the article quoted was flat out petulance.

Sometimes I wonder

I wonder sometimes how happy Anne Rice is continuing the Vampire Chronicles series. After all, I remember that, on the video for Interview With the Vampire, she did a promotion for what she said was probably going to be the last book of the series. I wonder if this is a case where the author is trying desperately to kill a series that no longer hold interest for them, but the publisher keeps adding zeros to the end of the advance cheque?

Just a thought.

You know, Great Western Dragon, you have to wonder if she’s very “happy” at all.

Interesting, in that I had no idea author’s vented their spleens on Amazon at those who didn’t like their books! Does anyone know if she’s alone in taking the time to do this? I also didn’t realize that authors actually wrote reviews of books, etc., on Amazon…do they really sign their names to them? And do they get paid for doing this stuff? I suppose it goes along with reading the outside back book jackets where various writers extol the virtues of each other’s works – which is, I assume, supposed to make us want to buy that particular book. In Anne’s case, I think I’d steer mighty clear of her recommendations.

You know,I actually liked “Interview with a Vampire” when I read it in ’89. I was pregnant at the time and used to have visions of “Rosemary’s Baby” – you know your basic paranoid mother to be kind of thing. “Interview” was the last one her books that I finished. I tried one other, I believe. Gee, I hope she doesn’t read LISNews, or she might “pen” me a diatribe, too.

The one thing I can safely say about Ms. Rice is that she is, indeed, prolific.

Me thinks she protests too much.

Amazon has always let authors comment about their books and any other book they want. I have read a few other article over the years about authors have discussions (or fights) with their readers in the Amazon comment area.

I think most authors are wise enough to realize that trying to comment on negative criticism of a book is a losing proposition.

I’ve read almost all of Rice’s works except for the ones she pens as A. Roquelaire. (They are quite spicy from what I hear.) The amazing thing about the whole Vampire Chronicles series is all the CRAP that Lestat goes through.

He becomes who he is through no fault of his own, gets to hang out with others of his kind that aren’t so stylized. Hmmm, gets burnt to a crisp by the (literally) the mother of all vamps. Is it any wonder he has a little memory lapse when it comes to using computers? 🙂

I am looking forward to reading this final chapter just to see how all the pieces finally come together and seque into the Mayfair Witches.
