Band Banned From Performing ‘Louie Louie’

“A pop culture controversy that has simmered for decades came to a head when a middle school marching band was told not to perform “Louie Louie.”

Benton Harbor Superintendent Paula Dawning cited the song’s allegedly raunchy lyrics in ordering the McCord Middle School band not to perform it in Saturday’s Grand Floral Parade, held as part of the Blossomtime Festival.””

    Because they are rectal orifices. Repeat after me: Any excuse will do for a tyrant. Consider that this anal retentive git has banned not the words but the music just because of an urban legend. Mind you, there can be no doubt that he believes the urban legend to be true. This does not speak well of school officious (the sort Twain knew so well) that they cannot even do thirty seconds of research at Google. Typing in: “lyrics” +”louie louie” generated a results page with The Straight Dope in the number one slot, where Cecil puts paid to the anal retentive nonsense, and The Smoking Gun in the number two slot where they detail the cross-dressing Hoover’s paranoia.

    That the Florida legislature hasn’t gotten into the act or that Tom DeLay hasn’t made it a new crusade? Some people (like this superintendent) just need to move out into the wilderness and leave the rest of us be.

    Do marching bands have lyrics? Even if they don’t like the lyrics, wouldn’t a marching band be just the tune?

    Can’t have anyone learning classic rock and/or roll in my school! Marching bands should stick with Sousa. 😉

    This happened in my highschool marching band when we were told we could no longer play the song “Tequila.” Again, we weren’t singing. And contrary to popular belief, marching to Sousa isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. It certainly doesn’t inspire crowds at football games…this has GOT to be related to the kybosh on cheerleading right?

    LOL. Tequila, they banned Tequila? Oh my. I know Sousa kind of sucks to march to, but that’s pretty much what we’ll be left with if they start banning the fun stuff. No more Hang on Sloopy… No more There’s no beer in Heaven. It’d be a sad day.
