Authors take top nods in gay literary awards

Houston Voice Online reports on the ‘Lammys’. The ceremony in New York honored literary achievements for books published in 2004 with gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender themes, characters and authors. Winners were chosen in 20 categories from more than 500 initial entries and 100 finalists. Gay booksellers, writers and members of the foundation from across the country vote to determine the recipients.

    Award Winner: The Gender Frontier
    The story neglects noting the author of this one work, Mariette Pathy Allen. Ms. Allen has documented the lives of transgender people for over two decades and was perhaps the first artist to portray our lives with a sense of complexity and context, not as interesting visual subjects or curiosities.

    In this, as in her previous work, people are portrayed with their families, children and friends. The personal narratives reflect the challenges faced by transgender people and have an emphasis on the growing political movement toward transgender equality.

    The work includes some images of transgender people’s bodies at different stages of transition and which despite being very intimate maintain a focus on our humanity and hopefully our inherent beauty as human beings. It’s a refreshing corrective to all the exploitive images so prevalent in both art and the mass media. I should note as a disclosure; in that I’ve known the artist for over 20 years.
