AT&T to Urge Customers to Use Less Wireless Data Unprecedented growth in wireless data use is prompting AT&T to consider ways to urge consumers to conserve. Story here. December 10, 2009 by Bibliofuture Uncategorized 8
always the way
“Mr. de la Vega cited the heaviest data users, saying that 40 percent of AT&T’s data traffic came from just 3 percent of its smartphone customers.”
It’s always the people who show up with thermoses and empty milk jugs that ruin Free Coffee Day for everyone.
Coincidentally
I’m not really a conspiracy theorist… no wait, yes I am.
Anyway, does anyone else find it kind of odd that AT&T is doing this just as Apple allows apps for users to stream video from their phones? Few things take up more bandwidth than streaming video. It seems convenient, but then again, that’s coming from a guy who has absolutely zero trust for large corporations.

Whats the point of “contracts” if the multi-national conglomerate can trump it at their whim? The iphone rules, but AT&T leaves a lot to be desired.
contracts
I seriously doubt the contract says that they have to give you unlimited bandwidth.
It probably read something like this: “Under this contract you have unlimited bandwidth but this can be modified by AT&T at anytime for any reason.
Tough
If they don’t want to live up to their sales pitches and their advertising promises then sod them, customers will just go to someone else, and by the look of the graphic above, Verizon!
Don’t sell a product if you can’t provide it.
Business as usual for telecom
“The company might consider a “pricing scheme that addresses the usage,” Mr. de la Vega said. But he said that would be determined by regulatory factors and industry competition, among other issues.”
This is exactly what they are trying to pull with their home users, too, and in fact, all the telecoms have been lobbying for this for years. Wait and see, they’ll be lobbying for a bill to address this in Congress, yet again. Support net neutrality!
What crap!
“The company might consider a “pricing scheme that addresses the usage,” Mr. de la Vega said…”
Part of “the deal” with purchasing an iPhone with the usage contract it has is UNLIMITED data download for $30/mo. In my mind, this fee is high enough, compared to Internet access costs at home and if the fee goes higher, they better provide an out for anyone with a Contract to avoid a cancellation charge, because THEY’RE breaking the contract we have!
You better you read your
You better you read your contract. I am sure it is written to allow rate increases. The contract probably offers no flexibility for users but the phone company would have clauses in the contract to allow changes from their side. It is a problem when no one reads the fine print.
