Arizona District looks at cutting busiest library’s hours

Potentially Bad News from Gilbert, Arizona… The busiest library in Maricopa County is facing cuts to its hours as Gilbert officials wrangle over balancing the town’s budget.Town officials have proposed a 10 percent cut to library hours, which would save an anticipated $237,500 a year. That would join other proposed cuts or fee increases to help the town prevent a $58 million budget deficit in the next five years.

“The numbers speak for themselves,” said county library spokeswoman Audrey Brownell, adding that studies have shown people visit their local library more often than attend Diamondbacks games. “Libraries are valued destinations.”
