The National Library of Scotland told a staff member to remove Saltires from his desk as they may intimidate non-Scottish workers, an MSP has learned.
SNP MSP Christine Grahame said the instruction to remove the flags was issued by the library’s director of customer services.
Ms Grahame described the policy as an “unacceptable slur” on Scotland’s national flag.
The library said the worker’s display of flags had been “excessive”.
Flags of Independence
Really, How silly. All the non-Scots need to do is to place a Union jack over the Scottish flag, and they have made their point, too. This is how it is displayed on the Union jack, anyway- St. George over St. Andrew. Heck, even the Irish cross of St. Patrick surmounts the Scottish symbol.
If you want to confuse everyone, buy a small Confederate flag with white stars over the St. Andrew cross- those who don’t know American history will be curious, and those who do will smile. Just watch out for the Clype.
And by-the-way, it is “The National Library of Scotland”, not the Scottish Branch of the British Library. The national symbol is a source of pride, not of intimidation.
So take these orders to remove the flag with a grain of saltire, if not a wee bit of satire, too.
