Amazon Marketplace Shrinks

There is a story at the Bookfinder.com blog called Amazon Marketplace shrinks Amazon.com has changed their policy, preventing aggregators like Abebooks, Alibris, A1Books, and others from listing member booksellers’ titles on Amazon.com Marketplace; this is part of a shift toward ensuring that Amazon.com is always dealing directly with the final booksellers.

    Alternatives to Amazilla

    Two alternatives to stay connected to the mid-sized sellers like Alibris, Abebooks, etc., are isbn.nu and the Book Burro user script for the Firefox browser. You’ll want the Greasemonkey user script manager, a Firefox extension, to use Book Burro.
    As a sometime used bookseller on Amaz*n Mktplace I have a mixed reaction to this news: it’s less competition for my listings, but overall it weakens the used bookseller market. I think the latter overshadows the former, especially in the light of Eric Raymond’s Cathedral vs. Bazaar model.
    As with any stress on a system, we find ways to adapt to it for better or worse. I look at it as an opportunity for the used book world to start weaning itself (ourselves) from Mamazon et al. So many of us depend on the Megasites to sell our wares now, but we have the tools and the conditions to become more independent.

    I’m happy to see this
    But I wish that ebay would boot them too. I regularly get updates from half.com (an ebay property) which show a book on my wishlist is available from abebooks. The last time I bought from the abebooks people through half.com they cancelled the order without explanation. I’m sure it was sold through another channel and not properly removed from online inventory.
