All Bad News

You may know the libraries are closed in Seattle (though not Quietly) and Minneapolis.

Meanwhile, Hagerstown, MD libraries brace for worst of state cuts. Pittsburgh Libraries prepare to cut staff, hours. Seattle expects even more cuts in city libraries’ ‘thin budget’. Similiar bad news in CT, MD, TX, and CA.

Does the ALA need to do More for budgets and worry about Filters Less?

    Where are the savings exactly?
    “We’ve only got a skeleton staff as it is,” she said. “We really appreciated the extra day of closing, because we got to catch up with work we couldn’t do when the public was here.”

    So, are the Librarians going to be in the buildings working without the patrons? I thought when you closed a branch for the day it was closed. Are only lowest paid people not being paid during the closing?

    ALA and local library budget issues
    I have never understood what people expect ALA to do about local budget issues. ALA can’t change the economy. ALA can’t make the people in my county vote for an increase in our taxing level. ALA can’t give us the funds we need. ALA can’t go to the city council, the county commissioners, or the state legislature to work for funding changes.

    There are many programs at ALA about budgeting, running election campaigns, fundraising, etc. ALA publishing has certainly given us many books on related subjects.

    I seriously would like to know exactly what people think ALA can do when they make comments saying something like “ALA should do more to help libraries with funding problems.”
