ALA Addresses Cuba at Midwinter Meeting

InfoWhale writes “During the last few days ALA was presented with its report created by a joint committee from the International Relations Committee and the Intellectual Freedom Committee. The results were very disappointing to members of Friends of Cuban Libraries – including myself. Here is the conclusion as written by San Diego Union-Tribune writer Luis Monteagudo Jr.

    Does it matter what ALA does? This is just one more time that they are an irrelevant organization. My leaning is to support the Cuban librarians, but will the backing of a lame duck american organization really be any help to these people?

    Yes, ALA has let progressive, caring members down again. However, IF they had supported the other organizations and people to call for the imprisoned Cuban librarians, IT WOULD HAVE HELPED PUT PRESSURE ON THEM TO DO SOMETHING. Luckily, ALA has responded to the US Patriot Act and other far-right wing laws passed by the Bush regime – so librarians can count on them on this matter. Also, Mitch Freedman and his friends have finally MADE ALA take a stand on low library staff salaries – after decades of refusing to.

    Info – Many of these “far-right wing” laws of Bush were originally authored by Bill Clinton. Some passed and became a part of the 1996 Antiterrorism Act.
