A Word to the unwise — program’s grammar check isn’t so smart

I ain’t needn it much, but NPR Has An Audio Report on the computerized grammar check in Microsoft Word be having some problems. Professor Sandeep Krishnamurthy has criticized Microsoft Word. He wrote the following sentence: “Microsoft the company should big improve Word grammar check.” The program found it acceptable.

Microsoft says it has been making continuous improvements in the grammar-checking tool, and the company notes that the issue is more complex than it might seem. Me says me grammar nice and good, but spelling be needing helps.

    Spell check will also tell you that dieing is spelled correctly.

    i.e.: Spell-check != correct word selection
    Spell-check only finds instances of non-existing words, and tries to help you fix those. It is not a substitute for a dictionary, or for a wide-ranging vocabulary. Just like a grammar-check does not help you convey meaning.

    Without those tools, it is harder to get a message across, but just following those rules doesn’t mean you get a message across.
