A Lonely Life On the Book Circuit

Touching and not at all atypical story of an author’s travels around the country (in this case Canada), to read from his book. That’s provided the author is not J.K. Rowling or someone of that ilk.

From the article: I am in Banff, for a reading of The Book of Stanley at the public library. When I arrive, moments before the event is set to begin, my audience consists of a local bookseller and the librarian who had invited me. They had a small display with my photograph and a review of the novel from the Globe and Mail.

“People will come,” said the librarian. “They’re on Banff time.” “A lot’s going on tonight,” said the bookseller.

For instance, TV. And the man at the Banff Springs Hotel, playing an electric guitar in the lounge and singing Margaritaville and The Girl from Ipanema with an enormous smile on his face.

The author is Todd Babiak, the book is The Book of Stanley and the report on his author tour is from the Edmonton Journal where Babiak is a columnist…he didn’t quit his day job.
