A Library Parody of “Downtown”?

Students at the University of Pennsylvania produced an open-captioned parody of the song popularized by Paula Petula Clark entitled “Downtown”. In this instance they sing the praises of the Weigle Information Commons instead. Video is available online from the library.

    They should have embedded the YouTube version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4z4Z717yD08) on their page as it offers more opportunities to share and spread their message.

      I took a look at the page source since you brought this up. What is embedded is a SWF player for a QuickTime file that is originally encoded at 320×240. Apparently I need stronger eyeglasses as they used too small print in their end attribution. The general rule of thumb for good television broadcast quality text on screen is to use a sans serif font at thirty six points or larger. Once you get below twenty four points generally things get increasingly unreadable.

      A case could be made for not using the YouTube version. With local hosting of content you have greater control over messaging which is sometimes useful to marketing and public relations. You can also do your own stats counting which Google can have trouble with at times. I know with the stats from FeedBurner we get phantom hits that aren’t real in the data I get.

      A lot of this comes down to local institution priorities.

    The point with videos is to advertise and spread the word. They have limited the “viral” nature of their messages but not using the tools that their audience are comfortable with and that their audience uses regularly.

    Since they put it on YouTube, they should have at least provided a link to it.
