A Difference of Opinion on Tote Bags

KVIA.com reports that tote bags are coming to the Farmington NM Public Library. Not everyone likes the idea however…

why don’t they sell them
Sell the things for a buck. Lots of people would buy them and the library could turn a ~$14K profit.

There, now everybody is happy. My work here is done.

  When I was in Ashtabula…
  Ashtabula County District Library sold totes to raise some funds. Those were some excellent totes, too. Selling for a buck is actually a really good idea that I have seen work in action.

Friends Fundraiser
Our Friends organization sells cloth tote bags as a fundraiser. The library does provide plastic bags, paid for by the Friends as well. Many of our patrons do have their own bags.

Bags for kids too
We’ve successfully sold tote bags for years – nice cloth ones you will see everywhere in town.
We have just introduced brightly coloured plastic woven ones for kids and they appear to be a big hit. They too are sold to raise funds. The makers say they are created from recycled plastic but there is no way to verify that.

Grocery Bags
I thought tote bags, e.g. those given away en masse at conferences, were more trouble than they were worth until my supermarket started charging 10 cents per paper grocery bag. Now I keep the tote bags in my car to use at the supermarket. The supermarket charges 90 cents for a reusable bag made from recycled plastic bottles. The library could charge 50 cents per tote bag and library users could reuse them at the supermarket or farmer’s market.
