Editorial comment from the author: As a native Washingtonian and hometown girl from the District, I’ve continually seen how the people of our nation’s capital (primarily African-American) are slighted. The fact that DC is essentially a territory, without significant representation or self-government makes it a step-child to the fifty states. Convenient as it may be for the home of our national government, DC and it’s library system should be a shining example of a superior system and a welcoming beacon for the people of the city.
