Please excuse the shameless self-promotion, but I have a project going on over at flickr – it is a group of photos of LIBRARIANS’ DESKS. I thought it would be interesting to see if they are neat, messy, bare, covered under piles and piles of paper, books, or whatever. I got this idea when I was absolutely disgusted with the state of my desk and took a photo of it.
C’mon over and check it out here, and please, share your desk too (if you dare)!
One rule: No ‘pre-photo-tidying up’! π
Thanks also to the Tame The Web Blog and Jessamyn for the mentions on those blogs.
And, flickr is way cool and you should check it out anyway if you don’t already!
nice! π Although, I am pretty jealous, some of those desks are pretty nice!!
Those pictures makes me feel better about the blackhole that is my desk.
mine
I added a couple of mine from three years ago. Nice to see I’m not the only one with a messy desk.
Re:mine
Huh. My pictures only show up as part of the pool when I’m logged in. When I log out, they’re gone. They’re set to Public. What am I missing?
Okay, I think I found it. Even though I created the account a long time ago, these are the first photos I’ve uploaded, so (I’m guessing that) my account is considered to be “pending.” If I’m right, my photos will show up eventually.
Re:mine
y’all are messy!
messy desks
This little bit came from an issue of Reader’s Digest a year or so ago, sorry don’t have the exact date.
“In Defense of Clutter
Don’t feel guilty about the Everest-like mounds of paper on your desk. They’re an essential part of the human thought process. In a series of studies across many occupations, social scientists Abigail Sellen and Richard Harper, co-authors of The Myth of the Paperless Office, observed that when people read at work, they use annotating, cross-referencing and paper-sorting to tackle complex problems. When only electronic files were used, or when papers were filed away, workers weren’t as effective. Piles of paper serve as ‘temporary holding patterns’ for ideas in progress. ‘People with messy desks don’t have messy heads,’ says Harper. ‘They’ve taken the mess out of their heads and piled it on their desks.’ (emphasis mine) So, tell people you’re a stacker, not a slacker.” By Sarah Safir.
I keep this piece taped to the window behind my circ desk. π

THAT is great thanks!
Re:messy desks
LOL. I wish I’d had this quote when I was still living at home with my Parents. “No, Mom, those clothes are on the floor because that are in a holding pattern until laundry day.” That’d have fixed their littles red wagons…
