2008 is Labour’s year of reading – but one library is closing every week in the UK

More than one library is closing every week as councils struggle with budget cuts.
A new analysis shows that rural areas – already suffering from school and post office closures – are being worst hit.
Even mobile libraries, which are supposed to provide a service when conventional ones close, have declined by ten per cent over the last seven years. Overall, the number of people borrowing from libraries has collapsed by about a quarter since 2001, from 17million to 13 million.
