Man Charged In Library Web Site Crack

Someone passed along This One that says a Philadelphia man has been charged with hacking into the Monroe County Library System\’s Web site, which had to be shut down for more than three weeks for $30,000 of repairs and security improvements.

He sounds like a decent guy, but since then they say they have spent $30,000 to repair damage caused by the hacking and install new hardware and software in an attempt to stymie new hacking efforts.

Presenting Copyright issues to highschool teacher

Russell McOrmond passed along Presentation Notes given to a group of teachers at their professional development day on copyright reform consultation.

He provides answers to questions like; \”The \”socialist\” ideas presented in this discussion may be easier to morally justify, but we live in a capitalist society.
\”, \”What is Microsoft \”.NET\”? \”, and \”If you don\’t restrict peoples ability to copy, how do you make money?\”.

Librarian’s Book Club

Troy Johnson writes \”Bibliofuture.com has a \”Librarian\’s Book Club.\” The Librarian\’s Book Club is a group to read and discuss books that are about libraries and the library profession. Every two months new books are selected to be read. The club was started in July of 2001 and is on it\’s tenth book and has 160 members. Members discuss the books via listserv. New books have been selected for March – April and we welcome new members. \”

There is also a nice section on eBook Readers and Libraries.

Libraries Crack Down On Rude Behavior

Here\’s A Very Short Story on a new county law banning people from library facilities for up to 90 days for rude behavior. Clackamas County, OR, librarians say they\’re seeing an increase in troublemakers, and they want to do something about it.

No details on the law, but they do mention that libraries often double as babysitting services for parents who drop their children off for extended periods of time.

The File Room discussed

A story/thread on Slashdot entitled The
Futility of Censorship
is about a project called The File Room by an
artist named Antonio Muntadas, and how it shows (or
doesn\’t show) that the existence of the internet stands to
work against censorship. What The File Room is is an
archive of censored materials from around the world,
making them available to anyone who has (full) access to
the internet.

Jupiter Media Metrix Search Engine Ratings

Ryan writes: \”Good and interesting article from Searchenginewatch.com. Also includes good links, as usual.

For those of us who aren\’t/weren\’t/won\’t ever be math majors and th.f. think numbers are not only snazzy, but ultimately significant: revamped and purportedly more accurate search engine popularity stats made public.

World Copyright Treaties Would Expand Reach of U.S. Internet Legislation

From Wired News…
\”Two treaties taking effect this spring would expand the reach of controversial American legislation designed to regulate the Internet. The World Intellectual Property Organization, an international body of government representatives that globalizes laws, announced new guidelines to crack down on digital piracy. The WIPO Copyright Treaty and the WIPO Performance and Phonograms Treaty, which go into effect over the next three months, extend copyright protection to computer programs, movies and music.\” More

Librarian Calls for Screening Public Access to Nuclear Documents

Another twist in the ongoing \”access to information\” stories, this time The Chronicle of Higher Ed says a documents librarian at the State University of New York at Oswego sent out an e-mail message urging fellow librarians to screen requests for Nuclear Regulatory Commission documents.

This time the the U.S. Government Printing Office said the request threatened to restrict access to public documents
