Yo, Read Y’all!

Adri writes “Oklahoma’s literacy campaign Read Y’all has gotten AP headlines for its latest poster girl Carrie Underwood. Mind you plenty of folks are complaining about the use of Y’all in the campaign…” Well it beats the “Don’t Read” campaign. But why do all these contrived efforts to be folksy remind me of that Appalachian State University video?

Takes me back, oh, forty years or so. Very funny, not intentially I don’t think, but it goes on way too long and is not as good as the calypso song “hot hot hot”.

You’re thinking of a different American Idol contestant, Kelly Pickler, who was from North Carolina, not Oklahoma. Kelly, not Carrie, was the ditzy blonde who couldn’t pronounce calamari. Kelly lost and Carrie won. Carrie has since graduated magna cum laude from Northeastern State University with her Bachelor’s degree and continues to be a huge supporter of the Humane Society, among other things. She is doing a lot to represent Oklahoma positively.

As for the Read Y’all campaign, it may not the greatest image booster for Oklahoma, but as someone who was born and raised in Oklahoma, I can honestly say that “y’all” is a part of everday life. “Y’all” represents a any group of people, togetherness and community, all of which are part of the intention of the entire campaign.

Yes, calamari is squid!
So what if it’s squid? Fried and battered, so you don’t really taste anything. Yes, I’ve had it several times and it’s about the only seafood that I like. By the way, Carrie Underwood is a vegetarian, so she wouldn’t eat it anyway! Not that any of that matters anyway. The whole point of the original post was about the Read Y’all campaign and what kind of message it sends about Oklahomans. I was interested in hearing what others thought of the campaign, but I guess no one ever stays on topic around here. Especially when squid is involved!
