Bearkat writes “The Wall Street Journal hosted a “lively” online debate between Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, and Britannica Editor in Chief Dale Hoiberg. The Chronicle of Higher Education has a commentary section on the debate.
One of the more interesting quotes: Mr. Wales: .. Britannica is “proprietary rather than freely licensed, they would have a very hard time attracting the kind of talent that we have.” He added that “it is a misunderstanding to think of ‘openness’ as antithetical to quality.””
Both lost the debate
I read the article and I feel both sides lost the debate. They both acted like complete idiots ahd failed to budge from their extreme positions. Both wikipedia and Britannica have value for different reasons and uses. Both have stenghts and weaknesses.
