White House: Quote the peace poets nevermore

Here\’s One from The Detroit Free Press that takes Laura Bush to task for stopping poetry day at the White House.

She called off the \”Poetry and the American Voice\” symposium when some poets dared to raise their voices against the seemingly inevitable attack on Iraq. Now, instead of delivering a collection of anti-war poems to the first lady, poets are staging readings around the country today. Houston Chronicle has one too, Along With Many Others.

\”While Mrs. Bush respects the right of all Americans to express their opinions,\” a spokeswoman said, \”she, too, has opinions and believes it would be inappropriate to turn a literary event into a political forum.\”
