When it rained, tears poured from library staff

Charles Davis writes “From story at
MorningJournalNews.com, George W.S. Hays, director of the Salem Public Library, described the process of
cleaning up after Saturday’s severe flooding as “a very painful experience.�
Painful because an estimated 8,000 books and an unknown number of periodicals had to be
thrown out after they were ruined by the waters, which turned downtown Salem and many
other parts of the city into a lagoon in less than an hour.”

    This was one of my childhood libraries.
    We lived in the country between this library and two others, and I read my way through that children’s section as a kid. It’s a great place– the town is the home of the painter Charles Burchfield, and they have some of his originals upstairs (out of the flood thank goodness.) I have probably borrowed a lot of the material that was ruined in the flood.
