When it rained, tears poured from library staff

MorningJournalNews.com, George W.S. Hays, director of the Salem Public Library, described the process of
cleaning up after Saturday’s severe flooding as “a very painful experience.�
Painful because an estimated 8,000 books and an unknown number of periodicals had to be
thrown out after they were ruined by the waters, which turned downtown Salem and many
other parts of the city into a lagoon in less than an hour.”
