VIEWPOINT: Don’t waste funds on W’s library

Anonymous Patron writes “The Daily Texan – Opinion column says the new library seems to be a case of misplaced priorities. Students are more concerned with tuition increases and how the UT System resources would be used to solve the budget problem, rather than demanding more Bush representation on campus at great expense. We guess a small chunk of the students and faculty on campus will cheer, but many more students would boo, and the vast majority won’t care except when it comes time to pay off their student loans.”

    UT Austin doesn’t need another Presidential Lib.
    As an alumnus of UT GSLIS, my $0.02 is that UT Austin should be content having the LBJ Library. I’m ashamed to say that I never made it through the doors of the LBJ library during my two years at UT. It looked nice from the outside though.

    Although I think UT should let another institution have the GWB library, it would be strangely appropriate to have both Presidential libraries on campus. After all, both Presidents fought optional wars of choice on countries that posed no realistic threat to the United States or to countries in the region. Both conflicts were very divisive at home and isolated the United States in the world.

    It’s still too early to say that neither conflict managed to bring meaningful democracy and freedom; although both had elections that were hailed as a victory over terrorists. My hope continues to be a federal Iraq where each major group can work out its democratic salvation in peace.
