Utah officials dedicate new State Archives Building

Anonymous Patron writes A New Archive In Utah! The two-story building is a vast improvement over the old vault and the old archives building on Capitol Hill, two of several places the constitution had been stored.

The new building has a controlled interior environment to hold the temperature at 60 degrees Fahrenheit and the relative humidity at 40 percent to increase the longevity of the collection.

The facility is also the first archives in the United States to feature an “automatic storage-automatic retrieval” system, which entails the use of tall steel frames holding metal shelving containing boxes of archival materials. Shelves are retrieved with robotic machines on tracks, allowing for a densely stored, yet rapidly accessible collection of state documents, said project architect Allen Roberts.

The project joins the State Archives and State History staffs in administering a joint research and reading room, constructed on the south wing of the adjacent Rio Grande Railroad Depot.

The depot is being renovated as the second phase of the $7 million state-funded project.”
