Use of Non-Fiction Books in Public Libraries

Jay writes “Several public libraries are taking important step in promoting non-fiction books for young children. This can be a fun experience for them since many new books are being published in an attractive and eye-catching format. A pilot series of science literacy nights for students in third through fifth grades will be launched at the Sikeston Public Library later this month. See Children to take a learning ride. Excerpt: ‘Books in a library’s nonfiction section are rarely given a second glance by children unless there’s some type of report due in school.
But children’s librarian Ann Thompson said she’s looking to change that trend when she launches a pilot series of science literacy nights for students in third through fifth grades at the Sikeston Public Library later this month.’

The Abington Township Public Library’s
Children Department has several events planned during the winter including Children’s display of snow poetry and World War II Series for children of ages seven and up. Such events bring families with their children to the library and provide opportunities to browse and check out books.”
