I was suprised to see “Use of blog turns into lesson on spam” in the Buffalo News this morning. Bloggers say setting up spam-blocking software and reading through the comments on their sites usually is enough to fight off pitches for porn, cheap drugs and college degrees.
But the battle with spam can be frustrating, with even locally oriented sites receiving hundreds of spam comments a day.
“It’s really hard,” said Val Dunne, Web master for the BuffaloRoots.com music site. “The thing is, spammers are always a jump ahead of us.”
The majority of hits to LISHost are now from spammers.
Web 2.0 – Usenet?
Anyone here remember Usenet? The splog (spam + blog) article in Wired’s issue 14.09 predicted that Web 2.0 may go the way of Usenet if spam becomes the overwhelming majority of blog content.
Re:Web 2.0 – Usenet?
We’re already there!
What’s Usenet?
Isn’t that something old people use…
Spammers are “hitting” the site?
Do you mean, they try to clog your referer list? They aren’t spam-commenting AFAICT.
Also, the story’s link is at http://www.buffalonews.com/editorial/20061119/1042 310.asp but it doesn’t seem to be in your post itself.
