twistedlibrarian writes “A political satire entitled Richie Bush by cartoonist Peter Kuper, of Mad Magazine and “Spy vs. Spyâ€? fame, is one of two stories from the Eastern European comic anthology Stripburger that has caused several books from a recent shipment to the port of Charleston to be seized by U.S. Customs. The stated reason: Richie Bush and a short ecological/industrialization parable titled Moj Stub (My Pole) by Serbian cartoonist Bojan Redzic are “clearly piratical copiesâ€? of registered copyrights. The Redzic story has three panels in which characters from “Peanutsâ€? are portrayed to make a political point.

Oh really?
Wow.
I say again. Wow.
So by that logic, I need to pull a couple of hardbound copies of the Star Wars Tales graphic novel series from my shelf. See there’s a couple of stories in there where you can spot some “copyright infringing” characters in the background. Among others clearly visible in a bar scene one can find Bullwinkle, Alien, Predator, Mike and Sully from Monsters Inc. and Bob’s Big Boy. Another story, perhaps by the same artist, takes place in a diner where one can see the Beatles ala Sgt. Pepper.
They’re not hidden, they’re just not the focus. But since I don’t know if the artist obtained permission to use these characters, perhaps I should pull them just in case.
I miss my country, it used to be such a nice place.
