Ultra-modern Technologies Abound at the Eugene Library

The Eugene (OR) Register-Guard has an article about one of several new technologies adapted by the Eugene Public Library to read books aloud to the blind and visually impaired.

Stations at downtown and branch libraries offer amazing accessibility to patrons with various disabilities:

  • Nineteen-inch monitor provides larger screen view

  • Roller trackball, in addition to standard mouse, offers greater control.
  • OpenBook software scans to “read” a page, then speaks the text aloud.
  • ZoomText software magnifies what’s onscreen up to 16 times.
  • JAWS (Job Access W/ Speech) enables access to nearly all web & e-mail.
  • Downtown library is wheelchair accessible.
  • American Sign Language interpreter available with 48-hour notice.
