Kelly writes “More on the UCLA taser policeman: “LOS ANGELES The U-C-L-A campus policeman who was videotaped shocking a student with a Taser reportedly has had previous violent encounters. KVOA TV reports via The Los Angeles Times, Terrence Duren also shot and wounded a homeless man three years ago and once was suspended for using his nightstick to choke someone outside a fraternity.”

All police officers have violent encounters
All police officers have violent encounters it is part of the job. Is your job so dangerous that you have to wear bullet resistant clothing? Do you have to carry a gun to protect yourself and others at work. Do you have a responsibility to keep lunatics from killing other people at your job.
So he shot a homeless man, did the homeless man need to be shot? It seems the reprimand about choking people worked, he didn’t choke anyone.
It is too bad you will never understand what it is like to be a police officer. It is work I couldn’t do as a career. I can’t handle a job where everyone thinks they know how to do my job and never refrains from telling me so.
Is there some reason you can’t wait for the investigation to come to a conclusion?
Re:All police officers have violent encounters
To answer your question: it’s too bad you, who claim to adhere to conservative values, have dropped some of them off into the garbage can in your rush to defend government and its agents, at every opportunity. I always thought conservatives had a healthy suspician of government abuse of power; I guess not when it’s your guys in power. To me, it is a matter of urgency to notice and bring attention to creeping government oppression at every opportunity, given the extraordinary efforts Bush & Cabal have made in recent years to curtail our individual liberties.
You might wish to consider what a real conservative, Paul Craig Roberts, who worked for Reagan, very recently said about this trend, which I think happens to be relevant to the UCLA taser cops:
“But, alas, ‘law and order conservatives’ have been brainwashed for decades that civil liberties are unnecessary interferences with the ability of police to protect us from criminals. Americans have forgot that we need protection from government more than we need protection from criminals. Once we cut down civil liberty so that police may better pursue criminals and terrorists, where do we stand when government turns on us?
This is the famous question asked by Sir Thomas More in the play, A Man for All Seasons. The answer is that we stand naked, unprotected by law. It is an act of the utmost ignorance and stupidity to assume that only criminals and terrorists will stand unprotected.”

The fact you seemingly cannot conceive of the government turning on us is a measure of how far you have sunk into what you think is “realism,” but is really unmitigated cynicism. And he is right, he is so right, when Roberts concludes in his article:
“Americans should be roused to fury that attorney general Alberto Gonzales and vice president Cheney have condemned the defense of American civil liberty as ‘a grave threat to US security.’ This blatant use of an orchestrated and propagandistic fear to create a ‘national security’ wedge against the Bill of Rights is an impeachable offense. Mark my words, the future of civil liberty in the US depends on the impeachment and conviction of Bush, Cheney, and Gonzales.”
Re:All police officers have violent encounters
Because assumed innocence before proving of guilt is just not fashionable in this country anymore. That and paranoia about the government a la previous commentor’s response.
CLEARLY, this police officer is one of Bush’s rough boys takin’ out the homeless, choking people and tasering college students. CLEARLY the government was repressing the poor drama idiot who was breaking the rules and intentionally starting a scene. /sarcasm
Re:All police officers have violent encounters
Wow you really draw some off the wall conclusions.
Too bad you can’t wait for the investigations to conclude before you form your opinions.
I think you are paranoid and frankly have decided it is a waste of my time responding to your rants. So have a happy Thanksgiving, unless of course you think that is just the man getting one over the downtrodden.
Re:All police officers have violent encounters
The fact that he has been suspended because of an alleged assault with a weapon is the more noteworthy part of the story than the existence of violent encounters, which is to be expected. LA Times also adds that he was recommended for dismissal in that earlier use of force. The article also provides more information about the shooting incident with the homeless person, in which he was cleared.
Police officers must be both prepared to undergo public scrutiny whenever they use force and also seriously undergo scrutiny whenever they use force, both internally and externally. It is both a reasonable and necessary part of their receipt of police powers and duties in order to prevent abuse. They are taught this in many states during the process in which they receive their peace officer license (which my roommate just completed). Public scrutiny is very warranted.
Re:All police officers have violent encounters
Meditate deeply for a hour or 2 a day on the title of Andy Grove’s book (Andy was CEO of Intel), “Only the Paranoid Survive.” You might learn something.
And a happy Thanksgiving to you. I think it’s a great holiday, as I have so much to be thankful for, including dialoging with you! 🙂
civil liberties are unnecessary interferences
You are right. The ones who think things like this are o.k. are fascists. Support for government like this is support for a fascist society.
