Three Novels on Racism Cause Problem for Schools – Groups Condemn Book Ban

Some folks in Nova Scotia are requesting that three novels be banned from the school\’s shelves. The titles are Harper Lee\’s \”To Kill a Mockingbird,\” John Ball\’s \”In the Heat of the Night,\” and Barbara Smucker\’s \”Underground to Canada.\” Those in favor of banning the books say that the books repeatedly use the word \”nigger\” which singles out black students from white students and subjects them to ridicule. Librarians, et al., have responded:

\”The suggestion that the books might be banned has caused a furor among librarians, authors and some teachers, who say that the books expose racial prejudice and any attempt to ban them would amount to the censorship of ideas.\”
