Mister Cow Cow writes “Piratetv Theater | Classic Radio Drama: This story takes place in the future; not a future which will happen, but a future which could happen….
It is the artist’s worst fear: the world of science and business has dominated the world. Gone are the uses for such things as poetry, philosphy and books. They simply create freedom of thought and this is not what this future is about. The State is in control. You need not think any longer; just be productive. If not, you will find yourself like our Mr. Wordsworth: in front of a jury ready to condemn you to death for living an obsolete life…that of a librarian! This is the tale of his final days………..”
Twighlight Zone ,etc. in a world where a large amount of people go hungry every night.
sounds like a great story. However, I think we have gotten close to something like that in our own time but with a twist. You can’t get rid of science and business to make way for art and one doesn’t replace the other. But something in our own time has happened that is just as awful. We are becoming increasingly dependant on science and business but we know very little about them. It is true that we are a highly industrialized and developed country but although we use high tech and are subjected to big business, we remain highly uneducated about them. For example, everyone is concerned with Global Warming, but almost no one can tell you what it is. Millions of people watch an elaborate music video but are unaware that it is not the product of one artist. Most middle class children have a computer but never learn how to properly search it for information. Most of us have lost the ability to debate, to break down a topic, to logically think through a problem. Historical thinking and scientific thinking are the province of only a very few people even though we live in a very scientific and historical world. the information age has brought tons of information to our public but very few of them know what to do with it. We have not become a science oriented society. We have just become a society that is ruled by science. But it is our own lack of knowledge, not science itself, that is the problem. Many scientific thinkers are also artists.
Business is only a reflection of our needs and what we demand. Almost 95% of the people who don’t like big business would support it 100% if they realized its the only way one family can have three cars, each member 10 pairs of sneakers, an ipod
I enjoy the TwighlightZone story but see that something else has happened to us. No one is holding a gun to our heads, not science, not business. We ourselves have turned away from really caring. Maybe not completely consciously but subconsciously we know that if we disagree or try to change, out will go the three cars, the ipod and all those sneakers; gone will be the giant flat screen tv and alot else we have gotten use to. In one sentance…the scientists and business men haven’t taken over, WE have opted to let them take command so we can continue to live the lifestyle we are accumstomed to.
Not far from the truth…
This is not that far from the truth, in a sense that nothing lasts forever and the same goes for libraries. Libaries have to evolve to meet current and future demands, otherwise we will become obsolete.
