The National Book Festival and Online Chats

Stephanie Holbrook, on behalf of the Library of Co writes “As all those who live and breathe literature know, nothing is better than a chance to meet your favorite celebrities, writers and storytellers. On September 24, 2005, the fifth annual National Book Festival will allow just that. Bringing together over 85 award-winning authors with booklovers and fans from around the country, this free cultural event invites individuals of all ages to participate in this event, sponsored by the Library of Congress and hosted by first lady Laura Bush.

Now in its fifth year, the 2005 National Book Festival is expected to be the biggest yet. A full list of participating authors, illustrators and poets can be found on the Festival’s website.

If you or members of your site’s audience cannot make it to this exciting Festival in Washington, DC don’t worry! During the week leading up to the festival on Saturday, Sept. 24, washingtonpost.com will host a series of online chats with authors appearing at the National Book Festival. Those that cannot attend, will be able to “virtually participate” in the National Book Festival and interact live with their favorite writers who will also be at the Festival.

Various authors scheduled to participate in the online chats include: David Baldacci, John Feinstein, Diana Gabaldon, Dana Gioia, Andrea Mitchell, Karin Slaughter, R.L. Stine and Judith Warner.

Through this opportunity, viewers can not only submit questions in advance or during the live discussion but they can also view authors’ responses while the program is airing live or at a later date on washingtonpost.com’s online discussion archive. These text-based discussions can be viewed daily starting on Monday, Sept. 19, on the site at: www.washingtonpost.com/bookfestival.

The schedule of chats and authors’ names will be posted on washingtonpost.com’s site and the Library’s site at www.loc.gov/today.

If you are planning a feature, I would also be happy to provide you with more detailed information and grant you exclusive interviews with authors participating in the Festival. Even a sidebar mention or calendar listing for the event would be a great help in spreading the word about this year’s Festival.

Best,
