The multibilllion-dollar copyright giveaway: How to localize anti-Bono efforts

David Rothman writes “How to fight the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act–the multibillion-dollar giveaway to Hollywood and entertainment conglomerates at the expense of schools, libraries and everyone else in creation?

One of the best ways is to localize your sentiments and also put them in the context of the Presidential campaign. That’s what I did this week in a note to a Democratic list here in Virginia, which will hold a Presidential primary on Tuesday. Stanford Professor Lawrence Lessig, who argued against the Bono Act before the Supreme Court, thought the wording was on target. Feel free to adapt my message–no credit needed! If enough people speak up to relevant Democratic and Republican email lists and write letters to local newspapers, then candidates won’t be able to go anywhere without the press asking them, “Where do you stand on Bono, and will you do anything about it?” Warning: Obviously librarians will need to consider the possible job-related risks of speaking out–and if need be consult with supervisors.
