The KGB, the Computer and Me

In the late 1980’s Cliff Stoll caught a German hacker that was using Berkeley computers to access military computers. Cliff Stoll wrote a book called The Cuckoo’s Egg that details the events. The book came out in 1989. NOVA did a episode in the early 90’s about the event. The episode is called The KGB, the Computer and Me. The episode is a reenactment with many of the characters played by themselves. Someone posted the show to YouTube in six parts. I pulled together the episodes and linked them on one page. If you are up for a somewhat campy NOVA episode and want to see some early 90’s computer technology you might want to take a look.

    I think the entire talk is worth listening to but every librarian should hear his comments on information is power. If you want to jump to these comments let the video load a moment so that you can drag the fast forward slider and go to 18:30.

    Cookies
    The Cuckoo’s Egg is also known for the chocolate chip cookie recipe on page 152 of the hardcover edition. (The recipe is in all editions but I don’t know the page numbers for the other editions)

    First Monday, the internet peer-reviewed journal mentions the recipe in an article called Cookies, Gift Giving, and the Internet.
