The key to cleaning up the internet is tackling the darknets, not letting censorship in by the back door

What the UK government should be concentrating on is an effort to break the financial ties that hold the darknets together. Finding who holds the purse strings is a complex task, but it’s a technique that’s been proven to work time and time again. And perhaps it should also be noted that it’s an approach that’s well within the capabilities of the powerful surveillance tools that government security agencies have put in place to monitor social connections and financial traffic online as part of their efforts to combat terrorism.

    That’s not really what it is though. There is the clamping down on child porn and on simulated rape (different issues to locking down the internet) but the having to opt in to allow you to look at porn is an exposing children TO porn issue. It’s a different thing.

    Anyway most people don’t think this will really happen, too many civil rights issues, lack of ability to actually block anything (look at how well they have done when the blocked the likes of Piratebay and other torrent sites, takes 5 seconds to get round that) but mainly due to the basic fact of who gets to define what porn is? That fact could leave it dragging for ages anyway alone.

    The funny thing is people moan when governments u-turn (as our current one has done several times and will do with this), but surely it’s better to do a u-turn if something is unpopular than just pushing on regardless? The u-turn is a response to people not wanting something, so why moan when they get what they wanted?
