The Democrats Favorite Books

Still undecided? 3 of the Democratic nominees for president have, at some point, named a few of their favorite books:
Wesley Clark’s, Howard Dean’s (Look for Chapter 10), and John Edwards’. You can also find George W. Bush’s Here. Now I don’t know how official any of these lists really are, so you might want to base your voting decisions on other factors as well.

“Jewish Authors”?
Is it just me, or does Clark’s claim that he likes “Jewish writers, [such as] Saul Bellow” seem odd?
One can only wonder how Mr Bellow would feel about being classified first as a “Jewish writer”.

Granted, it may “seem/sound odd”, but in fact it’s not odd at all. Jewish writers are both talented and prolific. Philip Roth, Elie Weisel, Norman Mailer, Isaac Bashevis Singer, Herman Wouk, Henry Roth, Bernard Malamud, etc. etc. And Bellow was born in Canada too…maybe Clark should have mentioned he likes Quebecois writers as well.

That set of authors seems, to me, to act as a counter-argument to the idea that “Jewish authors” can be lumped together as something that one likes. While Philip Roth and Singer may be writing with a Jewish voice, I don’t think that the same can be said of Mailer or Wouk.

The again, I’m sure that Mordecai Richler would laugh outrageously at the thought of being classified as a “Quebecois writer”.

Point taken, but maybe that’s why any categorization defies type; ex.- American authors, Indian authors Canadian authors, Spanish authors and so on.

Kerry’s Favorites
The Christian Science Monitor lists Kerry’s favorites (go to this page, scroll down to the candidate profiles, and then click on Kerry’s beautiful hair):

James Bradley’s “Flags of Our Fathers” and Stephen Ambrose’s “Undaunted Courage.” On the trail, he’s read Clyde Prestowitz’s “Rogue Nation,” and Barbara Ehrenreich’s “Nickel and Dimed.”

I’ll let you go there to find out what instrument he played in a teenage band.
