The Challenges of Library Renovation

Martin writes “The dean of the library at Cal Poly Pomona is in a bind. On the one hand he must find room in his building for more technology and study space, but the only way he can do this is to remove thousands of volumes of books and print journals. No matter what he does, someone is upset. And the situation at Cal Poly is far from unique. Because so many college libraries were built in the 1960s and 70s, when architecture was megalithic and drab, library buildings are now going through a flurry of remodeling to add light, technology, and social spaces.
