Text-Book Rental Program – threat to publishers?

    Textbooks
    Textbooks are the single worst scam outside car insurance in the State of Michigan that exists in this country. My wife recently completed her degree and I am glad because paying $54 for a chinzy 40 page workbook was insane, and $190 for the 19th edition of a book in 14 years was the same, we compared the last 3 editions one day and there was a total of 4 pages changed.

    I am willing to bet there are hidden sweetheart deals between publishers and universities requiring them to mandate the latest edition for their classes, because unless they are making money on it directly no one in their right mind would support this farce.

    The worst single offender is the company that makes software package for computer science courses (and user courses like Excel, Word etc) their material is outdated, poorly done, and put onto a CD that costs them less than a quarter in hard costs, and considering the overal quality and value of the work less than $1000 to produce initially, but they charge over $100 for each student, and then make them pay for blank tests cards to take tests. It is bloody well ridiculous on so many levels.

    Eventually their will be a huge scandal, and a class action suit on the issue of textbooks in the US, and I for one cannot wait to see it happen.
