Anonymous Patron writes “Chron.com reports Allowing children unfettered access to social networking Web sites such as MySpace.com, where they can fall victim to online sexual predators, is like letting them invite strangers home for the evening, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott told a congressional panel Tuesday.
“The most disturbing thing about these stories is that they are becoming all too common,” Abbott testified before the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s subcommittee on telecommunications and the Internet. “It’s time to end the denial.”

At the request of several parents, Brevard Public Libraries will develop a system to safeguard children from Internet predators, Library Services Director Cathy Schweinsberg said. RE: Texas AG: Children need to be protected from N
This makes perfect sense and the analogy is an apt one. Filters, as imperfect as they are, are appropriate for public library childrens’ rooms.
What children really need . . .
What children really need is to be protected from the blind fear-mongering of elected parasites who feed, vampire like, on the fear they help to foment.
My money is on that pompous ass looking to get re-elected by scaring the voters away from voting for anyone else.
Re: Texas AG: Children need to be protected from N
I think both of the above comments are correct !
Imaginary Problem?
There have book no reported cases of this problem in the county. Sure, we should protect our kids. But maybe they should spend time and money going after real reported problems. I’m sure child abuse has been reported in the county. How about breathing problems caused by auto exhaust or industries? Can the kids swim in the local ponds and streams or are they too dirty? This seems like a way to get folks scared about a non-issue and make them ignore the real issues facing the community.
If the library decides to filter their machines in the childrens’ area that is their decision. Having an AG come in and get some folks worked up and force it on the library is not how the decision should be made.
